CIMS Project |
Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) in collaboration with the SAT, hosted a multimedia, projection-based event showcasing work that focuses on aspects of the developing area of lower Boulevard St. Laurent, an area steeped in historic and symbolic significance to the city of Montréal. The projects aim was to enliven and stimulate the neighborhood for the evening by using various media such as light projections, digital animations, immersive environment , video, image and sound. The visuals and sounds have been gathered, composed and created by researchers at CIMS using a diverse set of processes and techniques that contribute to and reflect the etched character of this heritage-designated site. We were asked by CIMS to work hand and hand with IBM to enhance their proprietary 3D streaming technology for use within the projection-based showcase. We needed to have this technology ready to handle the streaming of large scale 3D environments with well over a million polygons. Some of the technologies we used for this project were: DCV, OpenScene Graph, LightTwist, Cyclosphere, C/C++, Linux, Collada, Maya. |
| AfterVote | |
![]()
AfterVote Site |
AfterVote is a widget based social search engine. With an AJAX backbone, AfterVote searches Google, MSN, and Yahoo. It then takes those results and lists them based on the user's criteria and AfterVote's social algorithms, while providing additional detail about each result such as Alexa ranking, Google Pagerank, domain age and much more. The social algorithms are the key to AfterVote's power. These algorithms are based off of the passive voting system that is in place. Here's an example of how this voting system works. You do a search for "Social Search Engine" and you click the first result. It's not what you were looking for, and is therefore not a useful result for your query. You press the back button and try result #2. Voila! You found exactly what you are looking for. But it's more than that. AfterVote is analyzing these results and has cast a vote for you automatically, saying that result #1 wasn't what you wanted, but #2 was. If you do however find an awesome site, you can manually vote for it as well. Other then the obvious design and common web development challenges we were faced with we also had to keep speed in mind. In order for AfterVote to be a success it needed to be fast so we put a lot of extra effort into optimizing our search routines. Some of the technologies we used for this project were: ASP.NET, C#, HTML, DHTML, XML, CSS, AJAX, JavaScript, MS SQL, Adobe Photoshop. |
| Font Viewer | |

Font Viewer Site |
Font Viewer was an in house project, we wanted to release a freeware tool that allowed designers to view their installed fonts in a fast and easy manner to speed up the decision making process when choosing a font type for various copy and logo work. Font Viewer actually has a long standing history with us here at Thinking BIG. Back in the late 90's we decided to make a quick application that allowed us to view all our fonts and their styles. We were getting sick of our other methods of trying to decide on what font to use for what copy or what font to use for a new logo etc … So we created this simple application that displayed all our fonts in a grid with their various styles, this way we could scroll through them fast and easy. It really cut down the time that went into the decision making process. Many years later we decided to spiff up the old Font Viewer and recreated it as free public tool for others to use. We hope it helps others like it has helped us! Along with the application we also created the Font Viewer website to show case the product and allow users to download it. Some of the technologies we used for this project were: C#, .Net, XML, PHP, HTML, DHTML, CSS, JavaScript, MySQL, Adobe Flash, Adobe Photoshop. |

The team at Thinking BIG is pleased to be working with Great Hobbies on revamping their internal information systems. Great Hobbies is a retail and mail order supplier of model related hobby supplies, serving model builders since 1984. Their business has grown primarily by word of mouth through satisfied customers. Their philosophy is to build the business one step at a time so that their customers can remain satisfied with their service. If you are a hobbyist - Great Hobbies are the guys to buy your toys from. Identifying that they needed to improve their internal applications to optimize for the high speed world of today they decided they required some external assistance so they began discussions with Thinking BIG's team to see how we could help streamline some of their processes. After discussing many aspects of their company and business workflow it became apparent that a custom Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system was needed to manage their company and assist their staff. We have made a long term commitment with Great Hobbies to improve their overall software toolset and business processes while working with them to structure development and financial portions to best fit their company's needs. |

Thinking BIG Laboratories Site |
Thinking BIG Laboratories was an in house imitative. We decided to create this website so we could share some of our technical ideas and findings, and hopefully create some good honest discussions with people who are interested in the same things we are, technology. While this site is labeled as a "labs" We hope it will become much more then that. Our vision for this site is to be a "labs" at the core with the majority of our discussions revolving around technical issues but we also hope to have some broader discussions that may not be technical in nature. With this site we wanted to implement a CMS for the backbone so we could easily add new posts and monitor comments. We also wanted the look and feel to be easy to use as well as attractive and fun. Some of the technologies we used for this project were: PHP, HTML, DHTML, CSS, JavaScript, MySQL, Adobe Flash, Adobe Photoshop. |
